 Research interest:
My research interests focus on

(1) sexual selection and mutual mate choice in a social monogamous cichlid fish, Pelvicachromis taeniatus. Major topics are the variable ornamentation of both sexes and its adaptive value, sexual dimorphism, assortative mating and the impact of sexual selection on morphological traits. 2D- and 3D computer-stimuli are applied in behavioural experiments to achieve a high degree of standardization. Spectrophotometry and colorimeter measurements are used for optimal calibration of the set-up. Furthermore, in cooperation with Timo Thünken, I investigate the influence of kinship and familiarity in mate choice and brood care, as well as the consequences of inbreeding on individual fitness. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

(2) visual stimuli and their application in behavioural research. Computer systems and their visual displays are tailored to human vision and may be critical to apply in species with different visual systems. Thus, I am interested in the development and suitability of different artificial stimuli and experimental designs for different species.

(3) host-parasite interactions of species with complex life cycles. In particular, I am interested in parasite-induced changes of behaviour, e.g. in Gammarus pulex - Pomphorhynchus laevis, the underlying mechanisms of parasite transmission and its impact on individual predation risk.
